Ultrafiltration is a separation technique using
membranes with pore sizes between 0.01 and 0.001 microns. It removes
impurities of high molecular weight, such as organic and inorganic polymeric
molecules and colloidal material, but is
ineffective against low molecular weight ions or molecules like calcium, sodium, and
magnesium chloride. Because it
targets high molecular weight particles, the osmotic pressure difference across the
membrane surface is negligible,
allowing high flux rates without the need for high pressures.
